The Lamb & Kid Top Knitting Travel Tips!

Lindsay at All You Knit is Love in Barcelona !
With summer in full swing, we KNOW our Kids have travel itineraries lined up across the globe. Lindsay herself has already been to Portugal, Spain and Alaska this year, with more travels on the way! Other Kids in the shop have also been to the United Kingdom, Denmark and Tennessee in 2026!
So how do we do it?! How do we manage to bring our knitting around the world in one piece AND have room to shop for more?! How do we keep our yarn smelling clean and not like the middle seat of an airplane?! Allow us to help.
Here are some of our Top Knitting Travel Tips!
1. Less is more. You may be working on the most BEAUTIFUL chunky sweater, but when traveling with knitting, this is when you should bring out your second WIP and pack something smaller. Think a sherbet bandana, some toast mitts, or a sophie scarf.

2. Pack that finished statement piece. We tend to "save things for good" but traveling is a GREAT time to bring a stunning knit for wearing around town - you'll get endless complements and you'll have fantastic photos because you're already in that mood! So go on, show off that knit to the world!
3. Use nail clippers in lieu of scissors. This is a personal hack. Since you cannot take scissors on airplanes, we instead travel with nail clippers! They can easily cut most yarn and can work in a pinch (we see you, sewing in your ends before landing).
4. Take the barber cord. Some countries and flights do not allow you to take your knitting needles onboard. Never fear! Make sure you always have barber cord with you when flying so you can quickly transition your project for a safe stowaway.
5. And the interchangeable needles. Nothing is worse than the bulk of multiple needles when traveling with limited bags and space. Invest in a set of interchangeable needles to keep your knitting bag as compact as possible!
6. This said, bring a needle gauge! You never know what lighting you'll be knitting in (midnight train?) and we all know reading the size of a needle is tedious. We also know different countries talk about needles differently (cough cough US 7 versus 4.5 mm). Bring your needle gauge!

7. Invest in travel-size hand wash soap. If you finish your knitting while on vacation (HOORAY!!) you're naturally going to want to block it. This is why we love traveling with some mini hand-wash soaps like those from Soak to do a quick "wash in the sink" while traveling!
8. Store your yarn in a bag that zips closed and keep notions contained ! When traveling, you do not want to be rummaging through your Mary Poppins bag or having your yarn cake roll out and down the airplane aisle (guilty). Keep your project in a zipped bag and store your notions in something small but cute!

9. Add a lavender sachet to your knitting bag! Need we say more? We always travel with lavender sachets to keep things smelling fresh! Fun fact, lavender is also a natural insect repellent - knitting while hiking here we come! We have some lovely ones from Kata Golda for sale in-store!
10. Bring the second hobby. You're on vacation - you may want to see something new and DO something new! Bring that second hobby you don't always have time for and seize the creativity for it in a new location!

Where ever you're traveling to this summer, we hope you have the BEST time! Happy Travels and Happy Knitting!
