All About Birdie - The Lamb & Kid's Best Seller!

Chances are, if you've heard of Lamb & Kid, you've heard of Birdie

But what is Birdie? And why are we seemingly obsessed with it?! Allow us to tell you all about Birdie and why it is oh-so magical.

Birdie is a light fingering yarn, composed of 74% Baby Suri Alpaca and 26% Silk. This combination makes Birdie essentially a softer, more allergy-friendly version of a traditional mohair. Think luxury yarn at its finest.

When knitted by itself, Birdie makes soft, drapey fabrics perfect for next-to-skin scarfs, shawls, or oversized sweaters, as yes, by itself this yarn will bloom and grow.

We've had numerous designers create All-Birdie Patterns! Here are some of our all-time favorites:

  1. The Choux Sweater by Jessie Maed Designs
  2. The Idaho Sunset Sweater and Idaho Sunset Shawl by Wanderlust Knitter
  3. The Regimental Cowl by The Lamb & Kid

What about All-Birdie Pattern adaptions? We've got you covered there too:

  1. The Ceallaigh Sweater by kolibri by johanna (We did Birdie held Double!)
  2. The Instant Crush Sweater by Joji Locatelli (We did Birdie held Double!)

When knitted with another yarn (our favorite combos are Birdie x Trio DK or Birdie x Elmer), Birdie gives a soft, fuzzy halo effect to knitted garments. By holding it with a stronger yarn, it will maintain its shape, but add extra oomph and coziness to your knits.

Some fan-favorite patterns where the Kids have held Birdie with another yarn base include:

  1. The NEW Kidding Around Shawl by Cassie Munksgard (Birdie held with Elmer!)
  2. The Halibut Sweater by Caitlin Hunter (We did Birdie held with Trio!)
  3. The Harvest Flower Sweater by Jessie Maed Designs (We did Birdie held with Trio DK!)
  4. The Laura Pullover by The Lamb & Kid (Birdie held with Elmer!)

Because Birdie is a light fingering yarn, it is genuinely a good yarn for all seasons - Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer - you name it, and there is a project Birdie can make for you. The Kids have knit everything from Tank Tops to Winter Sweaters with Birdie - it is our most versatile yarn by miles.

Still need convincing? In 2025, The Lamb & Kid sold over 5,500 skeins of Birdie! We might sing its praise in store, but you, dear customers, are the real testament to its quality.

Birdie's popularity is also why we use it as the yarn base to showcase our Hand-Dyed Color Catalog. Compared to bases like Trio, Birdie takes our hand-dyed yarn in a slightly lighter hue, all while maintaining the brightness of our beloved classics like Pop Rocks and Plaid is My Favorite Color.

Birdie Pop Rocks

With 328 yards / 50 g a skein, Birdie also pulls its weight when getting you through a project. Its likely you'll finish a project with partials, perfect for creating your own Scrappy piece ("Scrapshire" piece as Lindsay would call it) afterwards!

So what are the key takeaway characteristics of Birdie?

  1. Softness
  2. Extreme Versatility
  3. Fuzzy Halo
  4. Lots of Yardage
  5. Great for Year-Round Knitting

What if you like the idea of Birdie but need a different yarn weight? Fear not - The L&K has a whole Birdie family of yarns!

  1. Birdie (Our Best Seller, the Hero of this Blog)
  2. Birdie DK (If you need a bulkier dk weight - this is oh so SOFT!)
  3. Big Birdie (Another staple in our shop, with some more weight to the yarn!)

Want to easily compare all the yarn bases? We've got a blog post about it here)

So what are you waiting for - join the Birdie movement!

Lots of Love,
