A Re-Introduction to The Lamb & Kid Yarn Bases 2026

2026 has been a busy start for The Lamb & Kid! We've been dyeing up our beloved classics like birdie and trio dk as well as our newer fletcher bases. In the process, we too need reminder of all the scrummy yarns we have available to knit with.

That's why we've put together a comparison table of all our yarn bases with weight, yardage and grams. No more scouring around the store with 5 skeins in hand. No more multitude of tabs simultaneously shopping the website. Just a one stop shop blog post to ruminate on.

While we're at it, allow us to give you a refreshed description of our bases, conveniently written down on one page (efficiency, thy name is L&K).

Big Birdie

Big Birdie is our custom-milled alpaca/silk blend exclusive to The Lamb & Kid. This is an aran-weight shapeshifter—it can be knit down for a dense and luscious fabric or opened up for a light and airy one. This yarn makes perfectly fluffy sweaters, vests, and the coziest accessories.

Project Idea: The Fancy Sweater (You cannot make just one...good thing its a free pattern!)

Birdie

Birdie is known for its drape, this gorgeously soft baby suri alpaca yarn is blended with silk for strength. Birdie is the perfect alternative for those desiring a fluffy halo, but are allergic or sensitive to mohair. When held with another yarn, Birdie gives more opaque coverage than Mho Mho. Try it held single for a diaphanous effect, or doubled with itself, or another yarn, for more substance. To note: colors take slightly lighter to Birdie and its sisters, than to other bases.

Project Idea: The Regimental Cowl (free pattern!)

Birdie DK

Birdie DK has a higher alpaca content than the rest of the Birdie family so you get even more squishable softness. It has a slubby, thick-and-thin quality to both the yarn in the skein and in the finished fabric. Speaking of the fabric, think texture—just a bit of wild wavy-ness to your finished stitches—in an overall cuddly and drapey finish. This yarn feels heavenly against your skin.

Cabin

Cabin is American milled and grown with a composition of Romney and Merino. Our wooliest blend is light, springy, and sturdy, with great stitch definition thanks to the worsted spin. Cabin is fantastic for colorwork, cabling, and of course, mixing with other bases. We’re in love with the texture of its fabric, and we know you will be too! Big sister to Shed!

Project Idea: The Dadgmar Sweater by PetiteKnit (Caitlin is knitting this in colorway Frayed Jeans and it is GORGEOUS!)

Elmer

Elmer is a woolen spun Merino/Cashmere blend. Like Elmer Tweed, it's rustic with a beautiful texture and richness. It’s fantastic on its own and perfect for colorwork. It’s light, lofty, and holds its shape beautifully. All the hold and snap back of wool with a whisper of cashmere for softness and halo. This workhorse, I-can-do-anything yarn is a shop favorite. Elmer also knits spectacularly well at a sport weight.

Project Idea: The Laura Pullover (Elmer makes the BEST texture when held with birdie. Free pattern!)

Elmer Worsted

Elmer Worsted is a woolen spun Merino/ Cashmere blend just like our beloved Elmer Fingering. It's rustic yet so cushy, working up into light and lofty fabrics that hold their shape beautifully. All the hold and snap back of wool with a whisper of cashmere for softness and halo, and the heat-trapping powers of a good woolen spin!

Project Idea: The Popple Shawl (free pattern!)

Elmer Tweed

We just had to have us some tweed—some Elmer Tweed! Elmer Tweed is woolen spun with more than just a pinch of cashmere. It has a rustic essence and a beautiful richness. It’s fantastic on its own and perfect for colorwork. This tweed holds its shape beautifully while remaining lightweight and warm thanks to the insulating powers of a good woolen spin. This incredibly plush yarn will bring you right onto the tweed bandwagon, if we do say so ourselves!

Project Idea: The Caboodle Shawl (free pattern!)

Take the Elmer Tweed and make it Worsted! This has less yardage, but the same fiber blend.

Fletcher Aran

The fletcher family of yarns were introduced in 2025! We've been having fun making one-skein wonder hats! Both the Fletcher Aran and Fletcher Worsted yarns take dye nicely, are easy to work with, and give a "no frills, all fun" vibe to knitting!

The Aran version is 100% Non-Superwash 26 Micron South American Merino

Project Idea: The Cloud Hat (Lindsay made some cute kids' versions in Hi-Vis! Safety first, folks! Free pattern!)

Fletcher Worsted

The fletcher family of yarns were introduced in 2025! We've been knocking out sweaters in the Fletcher Worsted! Both the Fletcher Aran and Fletcher Worsted yarns take dye nicely, are easy to work with, and give a "no frills, all fun" vibe to knitting!

The Worsted version is 100% 20.5 Micron Organic Merino

Project Idea: The School Supply Sweater by Park Williams (We made ours in See You Later Alligator!)

Mho Mho

Mho Mho is made with the softest super kid mohair we could find blended with a touch of silk. We’re in love with the way it takes the dye—it has some serious glow! Knit held with other yarns it provides a translucent wash of color and a gorgeous halo of fluff.

Project Idea: The Bea Blouse or the Cumulus Blouse by PetiteKnit (is there such as thing as too many PetiteKnit sweaters?!)

Teddy Boucle

This base might be our most fun one yet! It's a bulky boucle with a fiber content we can get behind. Use this yarn in chunky pullovers or cardis, baby jackets or blankets, or anywhere you want to add some bulky goodness!

Project Idea: The Patagonia Peaks by Maya Déglon (we made up some kits in the Fall!) or Beanie No. 6 by My Favourite Things

Tod

Tod is a light and lofty, worsted spun DK weight yarn. Its perfect blend of yak and cashmere allows it to keep its shape while staying so soft and cuddly. The yak fibers in this blend give it durability, resistance to pilling, higher insulating properties, and softness.

Project Idea: The Sophie Scarf by PetiteKnit (we're currently making some in poppy and mint condition!)

Tod Worsted

It’s plump, squishy, and glorious! Its perfect blend of yak and cashmere allows it to keep its shape while staying so soft and cuddly. The yak fibers in this blend give it durability, resistance to pilling, higher insulating properties, and softness.

Project Idea: The Pebbles Hat or The Varsity Sweater (both free patterns!)

Trio

Trio is our custom-milled trifecta of merino, cashmere, and nylon. Trio is both hard working and delightful. Its merino content provides beautiful texture and memory, the cashmere brings a sumptuous hand, and the hint of nylon takes dye vibrantly and gives added structure in draping and durability. Trio is perfect for wardrobe staples from sweaters to accessories. It’s particularly good for summer garments feeling cool against the skin. Colors sing on this base!

Project Idea: The Wervel Sweater by Maaike van Geijn (see Margot Chien's colorwork version! Ravelry: Margotchien's Wervel

Trio DK

Trio DK is everything you love about our fingering-weight Trio, in a DK-weight custom-milled trifecta of 70% merino, 20% cashmere, and 10% nylon. It's a smoothly worsted spun, hard-working yarn that takes the dye beautifully, giving every color an extra glow-up! Trio DK's merino content provides beautiful texture and memory, the cashmere brings a sumptuous hand, and the hint of nylon adds structure in draping and durability. We adore this yarn for sweaters and accessories alike!
