Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions!

Thank you for your interest in The Lamb & Kid and our yarns and hand-dyed colors. We are a dye-pot to needle yarn store, where careful consideration is present in each and every step. Our love for beautiful hues inspires us to create unique colorways, ranging from vibrant to demure and everything in between. Please feel free to reach out to us (using the contact information in our page footer) if your question is not answered here. We’d love to hear from you!

I want to purchase a color and/or a yarn I don’t see on your website. Do you do special orders?
We really want to make your yarn dreams come true! Contact us for information on special orders. We keep a wish list for our dye lab and if we have a yarn in stock, we can often dye it for you. Call us during our shop hours, or email shop@thelambandkid.com and we can discuss availability, order minimums, and time frames!

What is your shipping policy? Do you have more information on shipping?
We ship worldwide using a variety of services. When placing an order on our website, you will be asked for your shipping information – please verify its accuracy before finalizing your order.

We offer products that are both ready to ship and dyed-to-order. If your order contains any dyed-to-order items, your entire order should ship within 14 business days. Ready-to-ship items leave our shop within 3 business days.

We offer free domestic and discounted international shipping on all orders over $150.00.

What is your return policy?
Please inspect your package within 7 business days of receipt. If we’ve made a shipping mistake, we will work hard to immediately rectify the error. Please email shop@thelambandkid.com with any shipping issues.

We know that sometimes you change your mind! We are happy to accept returns within 45 days of your order date. Yarn should be in its original condition and unwound. Return costs are the responsibility of the customer unless the return is due to our mistake or a faulty good.

Returns are processed to the original payment method. If your original payment method is no longer current, a store credit will be issued.

What do I make with your yarns?
We develop patterns in-house that use our yarns. Our Lamb & Kid patterns are free on our website and on Ravelry. We also love to help promote patterns that other designers develop using our yarns. Contact us at the shop for other ideas – we’re always sampling patterns and are very happy to talk with you about which of our bases will work well for the project you have in mind!

What can I do about color on my hands or when I block?
Hand-dyed yarns can have excess dye on them. We use heat and fixatives to set our dyes as thoroughly as we can in the dye lab, but sometimes, especially with dark, saturated, or layered colors, dye can bleed onto your hands or wooden needles.

If you are using darker colors, especially in combination with lighter colors, you may wish to soak your skeins first in water with a splash of vinegar to test their colorfastness.

Use metal needles when working with saturated colors.

Excess dye will wash off your hands.

How do I block my hand-dyed project?
Because some hand-dyed colors do contain excess dyes, we recommend a cautious approach to blocking.

We recommend blocking with steam: Lay out your project on a heatproof surface. Heat a steamer or steam iron and hover close to your project, steaming thoroughly. Pat into desired measurements or shape. Allow to dry.

You can choose to wet block: Fill a sink or tub with tepid water and a little wool soap. You may also wish to add a splash of vinegar and/or a color catcher. Do not leave your project to soak unattended if you have any concern about color transfer. Five minutes of supervised soaking allows your fibers to bloom and soften and should minimize any color transfer. If you notice excess dye releasing in the water, remove your project immediately. Gently squeeze water from your piece and roll it up in a towel to squeeze out more water. Lay your damp piece out on a blocking board or a towel and shape. Allow to dry.

Do you send out an email newsletter? How do I sign up for your emails?
We do send out regular emails – usually 1-2 times per week. This is a great way to keep up with us and find out what’s new and currently available. We also announce our dyed-to-order events here.
