Help! What Should I Knit With My Scrap Yarn?

Lindsay's Scrappy Lakes Pullover by Ozetta

Hello Friends!

We have been getting lots of questions about our scrap bar and scrappy projects recently, so we thought we'd talk all things scrap knitting on the blog!

Firstly, we've updated our FAQ page and added a portion about our Scrap Bar! Frequently Asked Questions – The Lamb & Kid

Secondly, let's dig into the knitty gritty.

What is a Scrap Bar?

In 2025 The Lamb & Kid created a Scrap Bar in our Store! This is a dedicated floor fixture filled with partial skeins of L&K yarns. Our Scrap Bar is perfect for when you're playing yarn chicken or want to try lots of different colors for a colorwork sweater. Plus, it's great for the environment to reduce yarn waste!

How much do L&K Scraps Cost?

Scraps are bought by weight - we charge $0.25 per gram! Stop by the store anytime and see what partials you can pick up!

What is a L&K Scrappy Bundle?

The L&K will create Scrappy Bundles from time to time weighed out to make a full project such as a sweater or hat! These are bought by weight as well and are hand-picked by L&K staff for the color palettes on offer.

What techniques do I need to know for Scrap Knitting?

Knitting with scrap yarn will require more technique due to the changing colors and additional loose ends of yarn. Thus be sure to brush up on your techniques! We recommend this in-depth article by Nimble Needles or these videos by Purl Soho on Jogless Stripes and Stripes in the Round. Wool And The Gang also has great videos for Weaving in Ends and Joining Colors!

What should I make with my Scrap Yarn?

This is the golden question, really. The question should actually be reframed to, what SHOULDN'T I make with my scrap yarn?! Lindsay has been making a plethora of patterns out of her scraps, and they key is that these are well-loved patterns, not just patterns modified for scraps. The thing is, scrap knitting is all about confidence. Sure, you want to get the weight and gauge in range, but the idea is that you should pick patterns you love and colors that inspire you. The rest will inevitably fall into place. Accessory knits and oversize sweaters are great scrappy projects to start with, as these have more ease with fit, which can be a factor when scrapping.

Here are some of the Scrappy Projects we recommend!

  1. Ravelry: Lakes Pullover pattern by Ozetta : Hailey Smedley (This is what Lindsay did her first scrappy sweater in!)
  2. Ravelry: Harris Hood pattern by Cheryl Mokhtari (This is what Lindsay did for her matching hood!) See it on Instagram !
  3. Ravelry: Scrappy Scribble Sweater pattern by Park Williams (Scrappy is in the name!)
  4. Ravelry: New Norma pattern by My Favourite Things (See how one of our customers made their own version from our scrap bar on Instagram!)
  5. Ravelry: Swatchtastic pattern by tincanknits (Accessories for the win!)
  6. Ravelry: Stash Dive Scarf pattern by Summer Lee (Again, stash is in the title!)
