It's Sweater Weather!

Hey there,
I'm Lindsay & I can't resist a good sweater. Anyone with me?
I went from knitting beanies to knitting sweaters about 5 years ago & have never looked back. It's the habit I just can't quit. There is something so satisfying about creating a garment that I know I'm going to love for decades.
Which brings me to The Varsity Sweater. It's a simple raglan sweater pattern that is so approachable & so far, has led me to my most worn sweater yet. I kid you not, my version of Varsity is almost always within arm's reach. I knit it up in Stone on Tod Worsted in 2023 & it continues to delight me. It's cozy, the fabric is perfection & it's worn so well over time.
When I go shopping with friends, I've developed a bad habit of seeing a sweater I love & stating "I can make this." It drives everyone crazy.
That said, in some instances, I can. I saw a sweater out on a shopping excursion one day (I'm not saying it was at Jenni Kayne, but it was at Jenni Kayne) that was a perfect simple pullover that I knew I would wear constantly & thought, I could modify the Varsity pattern & create this sweater. And I did! Thanks to Varsity.
So let's chat modifications, shall we?
I wanted a boxy, sweatshirt-esque fit with big ribbing on the waist & sleeves. I knit a size 2 Varsity sweater to pattern until the bottom ribbing, knitting 9" from the underarm. I switched up the one-by-one ribbing to a 3-1 and gave the bottom a hefty 3.5". I did the same on the arms & gave them a generous 4".
I can't recommend playing with patterns enough to create heirloom pieces that you are going to love forever. After all, that's the beauty of knitting - you get to create the style.
Have fun with your knits. You won't regret it, I promise.
